International Peace Day

My school, Alberto Alcocer, celebrated International Peace Day last Friday with high spirits and educational activities!

While the youngest children dressed up and did a small dance (mainly waving their arms and kicking their feet), other grades took to performing a bit more challenging of a dance, speeches and banners. In the past week, I worked with the 6th grade on creating a colorful banner about Malala Yousafzai, the youngest-ever to receive a Nobel Peace Prize for her activism for female education and Pakistani rights. We watched an interview with Malala, who described her unbelievable story of being shot in the head by the Taliban because of her activist writings at the young age of 16.
The students voted on their favorite quote of Malala's, and we wrote it on the banner, next to a small biography and photo.

They were proud to present the banner to the school on Friday, and some read their own favorite quote into the microphone.

It was a nice break from the classroom environment while still stressing the importance of fighting violence with peace.
